Useful Phrases for writing Letter of Advice

So we’ve already learnt what a letter of advice is (an informal letter to a friend giving specific advice about their problems) and how to write one.  We’ve also had a look at the grammar we need to write one convincingly.  This grammar includes the modal verbs ‘should’ and ‘must’, as well as features of informal language such as contractions and some conversational vocabulary.

Now we need to take a look at some useful phrases that we might be able to parachute into our essays.  In this lesson, it’s best to try and memorise as many phrases as you can – you’ll need them to answer the questions that follow.

Dear Isaac,

__________________________________ to hear from you.  __________________________________ so long, should we?  I was happy to get your letter a few days ago – __________________________________you seem to be having a problem with your basketball coach.  I know it’s annoying when you are a talented player and the coach still does not pick you for the first team.  In fact, I was in a similar situation myself a few years ago when I was on my school football team so I can totally understand __________________________________!  I can’t claim to have all the answers to your problem, but let me share with you some things __________________________________.

I think __________________________________is talk to your coach directly.  I know that it can be difficult in our culture to stand up to authority figures, but if you really are getting depressed about that fact that you think the coach is treating you unfairly, then you have to say so.  This is your future on the line.  It could be that the coach doesn’t realise that he is unfairly penalising you, in which case he will be glad you brought the matter to his attention.  Anyway, the way I see it is that __________________________________ talk to the coach or you can suffer in silence.  But the second option is going to cause more pain in the long run, I think.

__________________________________, I’d talk to my teammates to see if they have noticed anything similar to what you have been experiencing.  __________________________________ them if they have observed anything similar to you, or if any of them are experiencing similar problems?  This isn’t something you need to bring up before the whole team, but you could consider taking one or two of them aside and asking them what they think and if they have any advice for you.  Obviously, they know the coach better than I do, so they will be able to advise you better than I can.

Finally __________________________________, one of the best courses of action you could take is to keep records of your successes and the coach’s team selections.  That way, you will be able to present evidence to the coach about the times he’s left you off the team, even when you know you have been a competent player.

Anyway, __________________________________has been useful to you.  Don’t worry too much about it and do let me know __________________________________.

Best wishes,

Jimmy
