Test 4 Task 1 Model Essay by an Expert
The line graph compares the number of trips abroad taken by UK residents and the number of people visiting the UK from overseas, over a twenty-year period. Between 1979 and 1999, UK residents consistently took more foreign trips than visitors arrived in the UK from abroad. Visits both to and from the UK rose steadily from 1979 to around 1986, before beginning to rise more sharply for the rest of the time shown on the graph. Foreign visits made by UK residents rose more quickly than visits to the UK, with around 20 million more people leaving the UK than visiting it in 1999. This is compared to the much smaller difference of just two million in 1979.
The bar chart shows the most popular foreign destinations for UK citizens in 1999. France was the most popular country to visit that year, accounting for roughly one fifth of the 52 million total visits from the UK in 1999. France and Spain were the most popular destinations by some distance; the USA was the third most popular, with a difference of 5 million visitors between it and Spain, which had around 9 million visitors in 1999.
