Chapter Twenty (The Witches by Roald Dahl)

Chap 20 The Heart of a Mouse
47 184 Once back in Norway, the narrator found life a little difficult because he was so small. Name three things that his grandmother did to make his life easier.

1) She got a carpenter to put a number of slim ladders leading up to every table in the house.

2) She invented a door opening device which enabled him to get in and out of every room.

3) She invented a little light switch for him so he could turn the lights on in every room as he entered it.

4) She made him a miniature tooth brush

5) She made him a miniature bathtub.

48 188 Why was the narrator pleased to hear that he was only likely to live for around nine years? He was relieved because he wouldn’t want to be looked after by anyone else after his grandmother died.
49 190 What reason does the narrator give to his grandmother when she asks him if he is sure that he doesn’t mind being a mouse for the rest of his life? He tells her that ‘It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like so long as someone loves you.’
50 195 How does the narrator’s grandmother manage to discover the secret headquarters of the grand high witch and in which country is it located? She asked the head of police in Bournemouth if he knew the address of the woman staying in room 454. They had her passport on record and in it the address of a castle which is the headquarters. It was located in Norway.
51 196 Once the narrator and his grandmother have located the secret headquarters they plan to kill all of the witches who live there. What is the important role of cats in their plan and why couldn’t they use mouse traps instead? Once the witches have been turned into mice, they plan to introduce cats to kill all the mice before they can escape. The narrator asserts that the Grand High Witch had been wrong about mouse traps. Once a person has been turned into a mouse, they are more intelligent than an ordinary mouse and so wouldn’t go near a mouse trap.
