【DSE 英文】DSE Speaking Tips – Improving your Vocabulary I

Having a wide vocabulary is a good way to improve your marks.

The methods include are:

  • Varying the words of the question;
  • Learning new ways to give your opinion

DSE 英文 Speaking Tips – Improving your vocabulary 1a -varying the words of the questions to make it feel like you have a wider range of vocabulary

第一個方法,就是就地取材,利用本身條題目,用自己英文,表達你的立場)

If you can, don’t use the words of the question. Repeating what the examiner says does not show your own knowledge. Listen to these examples. Notice which one sounds better.

DSE 英文 Speaking – 看看例子

比較一下以下兩個答案,那一個答案令人感覺學生的詞彙比較豐富呢?

Do you think there are health risks in eating raw fish?

1. I think there are some health risks in eating fish.

2. Yes, consuming raw fish does involve some potential dangers to health.

Do you think that public spaces in Hong Kong give enough space for people?

1. I don’t think that public spaces in Hong Kong give enough space for people.

2. In my view, Hong Kong’s public areas just aren’t big enough for our growing population.

DSE 英文 Speaking – Improving your vocabulary 1b – Learning new ways to give your opinions

How to expressing opinions to show your depth of vocabulary (這個方法就是利用不同短句去表達你的意見,有些短句是可以背誦的,然後在每個意見之前加一些不同的短句)

You usually need to express an opinion when you answer 1-minute response questions. Here are some more interesting ways to express your opinion than “I think”.

Do you think it is possible for people to be happy without money?

My personal opinion is that it is achieveable to be content without money, but I have no doubt in my mind that it would be difficult. It is hard to imagine a life without money, and if you ask me, the majority of people would find it too much of a challenge. To be honest, I would find it too challenging myself. Without money, we’d have to work very hard just to survive. This might be controversial, but I really enjoy the luxuries that money can buy, and I don’t think I could give those up easily!

These phrases are easy to use, because you can just put them straight in front of the opinion you want to express, without having to change the grammar. Just remember not to include ‘I think’ as well as the opinion phrase.

【DSE 英文】DSE Speaking Tips – Dealing with mistakes

Everybody makes mistakes when they speak, even native English speakers

Here is the rule for if you make a mistake: if it’s quick to correct, correct it.

DSE 英文 Speaking – Dealing with small mistakes (英文說話考試,講錯了一點點,怎麼辦?)

If you make a small mistake…

…like grammar or vocabulary, correct it if you can do so easily and quickly, without disturbing the flow of your answer:

I think that to improve your grades at school, the first thing you have to do is change your altitude… attitude.

Despite of the health benefits… Despite the health benefits, cycling can be dangerous, particularly on busy roads.

However, it’s also ok to continue without correcting your mistake, if the meaning is not affected, if the examiner will still understand what you are saying.

DSE 英文 Speaking – Dealing with big mistakes (

英文說話考試,答錯了,怎麼辦?)

If you make a big mistake…

… don’t spend a long time going back to correct it. Sometimes you might get confused and make too many mistakes. In this case, use natural English phrases to start again:

  • “Sorry, let’s try that again.”
  • “Sorry, I’ll just start that again.”

Do you think people in Hong Kong should be educated about nature?

It is absolutely… It is better than to… get to know the nature… nature… nature that is… Sorry, I’ll just start that again. [deep breath] It is absolutely crucial that people in Hong Kong learn about nature.

【DSE 英文】DSE Speaking Tips – Improve your fluency

In the examiners reports, good fluency is described as rarely repeated oneself or having to correct mistakes, and only hesitating to think of ideas

In this video, here are some tips to help you to be more fluent:

  • Use cohesive features
  • Avoid long pauses

DSE 英文 Speaking – Improve your fluency by using cohesive features (利用適當的連接詞)

Cohesive features join sentences together. If you don’t use cohesive features, it can sound like you’re just listing ideas which aren’t connected.

Can household chores help you keep fit? (mediocre answer)

I don’t think you get much better exercise when you’re cleaning. You have to be flexible. You’re cleaning places that are high up and low down. Your body has to be flexible and active. Keeping the house clean requires hard work. If there are difficult stains, you have to work hard to clean them. Cleaning takes a long time. You can’t clean your house in fifteen minutes. Cleaning is a good way to keep fit.

Can household chores help you keep fit? (better connected answer)

Well, I have to say that I don’t think you can get much better exercise than where you’re cleaning. Firstly, you have to be really flexible, because you’re cleaning places that are high up and also low down on the ground. So as you can see, your body has to be flexible in that respect, which is good for keeping active. As well as flexibility, keeping the house clean requires hard work. For example, if there’s a difficult stain, you have to work physically hard to get rid of it. Other than that, cleaning also takes a really long time. If you’re talking about cleaning a whole house, it can take a whole afternoon! So the fact that you have to be flexible, work hard, and spend a long time on the activity makes me think that cleaning is a really good way to stay healthy and keep fit.

DSE 英文 Speaking – Improve your fluency by avoiding long pauses (減短停頓時間)

In the examiners reports, it says that students should avoid long pauses. It is better to find an imperfect word than to have a long silence while you try to think of the best word. Compare these extracts from a student’s answer:

Apart from health benefits, why should people exercise?

Exercise helps you learn skills like […………] erm [………..] oh, perseverance.

Exercise helps you learn skills like […] erm, being able to stay with a difficult task.
