【DSE 英文】DSE Speaking Tips – Improve your fluency

In the examiners reports, good fluency is described as rarely repeated oneself or having to correct mistakes, and only hesitating to think of ideas

In this video, here are some tips to help you to be more fluent:

  • Use cohesive features
  • Avoid long pauses

DSE 英文 Speaking – Improve your fluency by using cohesive features (利用適當的連接詞)

Cohesive features join sentences together. If you don’t use cohesive features, it can sound like you’re just listing ideas which aren’t connected.

Can household chores help you keep fit? (mediocre answer)

I don’t think you get much better exercise when you’re cleaning. You have to be flexible. You’re cleaning places that are high up and low down. Your body has to be flexible and active. Keeping the house clean requires hard work. If there are difficult stains, you have to work hard to clean them. Cleaning takes a long time. You can’t clean your house in fifteen minutes. Cleaning is a good way to keep fit.

Can household chores help you keep fit? (better connected answer)

Well, I have to say that I don’t think you can get much better exercise than where you’re cleaning. Firstly, you have to be really flexible, because you’re cleaning places that are high up and also low down on the ground. So as you can see, your body has to be flexible in that respect, which is good for keeping active. As well as flexibility, keeping the house clean requires hard work. For example, if there’s a difficult stain, you have to work physically hard to get rid of it. Other than that, cleaning also takes a really long time. If you’re talking about cleaning a whole house, it can take a whole afternoon! So the fact that you have to be flexible, work hard, and spend a long time on the activity makes me think that cleaning is a really good way to stay healthy and keep fit.

DSE 英文 Speaking – Improve your fluency by avoiding long pauses (減短停頓時間)

In the examiners reports, it says that students should avoid long pauses. It is better to find an imperfect word than to have a long silence while you try to think of the best word. Compare these extracts from a student’s answer:

Apart from health benefits, why should people exercise?

Exercise helps you learn skills like […………] erm [………..] oh, perseverance.

Exercise helps you learn skills like […] erm, being able to stay with a difficult task.

【DSE 英文】DSE Speaking – Sample answer with the suggested best structure

Sample Answer

Would you like to live a simple life away from the city?

Introduction

Leaving the busyness of the city behind seems very appealing to me. I think it would be very refreshing to go into the countryside and live a simple life there.

Reason 1

I think the most appealing idea is that you could be your own boss in the countryside. You wouldn’t have to work for anyone else, as you would have everything you need already. It would be an escape from the stresses of the workplace, and all the meaningless paperwork usually involved in city jobs.

Reason 2

A simple life would also be extremely rewarding, and it would be easy to see the fruits of your labour. There is nothing more satisfying than growing plants and raising animals, because you can see the results for yourself. Unlike working in the city, your achievements are living and breathing, not just money in the bank.

Conclusion

Although this idea is very attractive, I don’t think I will ever actually do it. I have lots of responsibilities in the city, and when I am older there will be people who depend on me financially.

【DSE 英文】DSE Speaking Conclusion

    1. Use this simple structure to give your answer. Introduction -> reason 1 (+ explanation/example) -> reason 2 (+ explanation/example) -> conclusion
    2. If you really can’t think of two reasons, just try to develop your first reason with some good examples; the best answers, however, will have two well-supported reasons for your opinion

【DSE 英文】DSE Speaking Tips 3 – Stalling for time 拖延時間技巧

Sometimes you’re asked a difficult question. Here are tips from the examiners reports to help you to get more time to think about your answer.

      • Don’t use stock phrases to start your answer.
      • Repeat back the question to have some more time to think.

【DSE 英文】試卷四說話 – 如何拖延時間想答案?

Don’t… (千萬不要)

    • Don’t use phrases like “That’s a good question” or “Let me think about that”: examiners have heard them lots of times
    • Examiners really hate it if you use these phrases when the question isn’t difficult: it’s a waste of time, and examiners find it annoying
    • Don’t waste time saying ‘Thank-you for your question’ at the start of your answer. Just go straight into your answer.

【DSE 英文】試卷四說話 – 如何拖延時間想答案?

Do… (拖延時間方法)

    • Only use phrases like the following if you really need time to think about the answer.
    • If you need to get some extra time to think, repeat back the question. If possible, change the words, so that you are not just copying the examiner
    • The word ‘well’ is a natural way to move on from the question to your answer.

【DSE 英文】試卷四說話 – 實戰例子

Do the public have the right to know about celebrities’ private lives?

Do celebrities have a right to privacy, or should people be able to know everything about them? Hmm, well I think that…

Do you think that living in the countryside is the best way to live?

Is living away from the city really the ideal lifestyle? Well, in my view…

Is it better to exercise outside or in a gym?

Outside or in the gym: which is the best option? Well, in my experience…
