Difficult Questions: Giving your Answers

Here are some phrases you can use if you want to show that the question is difficult. These are natural English phrases that native speakers use all the time, if they are not sure of what to say.

Phrase Example 1: 

I’m no expert/scientist/economist, but I think…

What are the differences between Western and Asian table manners?

I’m no expert, but I think that the main difference might be related to whether people have their own dish, or share from a communal plate.

Do you think teenagers’ brains work in a different way to adults’ brains?

I’m no psychologist, but I think that there are probably differences between teenagers’ and adults’ brains

Phrase Example 2: 

I’m not very familiar with this topic, but I’d say that…

What are the key ingredients for a viral video?
I’m not very familiar with this topic, because I rarely watch viral videos, but I’d say that one the key elements is probably humour.

Do you think the subjects in Cantopop songs are relevant to people in Hong Kong?
I don’t listen to much Cantopop, so I’m not very familiar with this topic, but I’d say that they are quite relevant, with a few exceptions.

Phrase Example 3: 

I’m not sure, but off the top of my head…

Do you think that everyone who does an internship is more likely to get a good job?

I’m not sure of the exact statistics, but off the top of my head, I reckon that most students who do an internship get a good job later in life.

 Can comedy plays portray a serious message?

I’m not sure, but off the top of my head, I’m sure there are lots of comedies with a serious message.

Phrase Example 4: 

In my limited experience…

Should parents have the right to read their child’s diary?

In my limited experience, I have found that children really cherish their privacy, so I believe that parents don’t have the right to read their child’s diary.

Do you think it would be hard to mix with foreign students on a study tour?

In my limited experience, I think that there would be some difficulties mixing with students from other countries.
