The line graph compares the number of trips abroad taken by UK residents and the number of people visiting the UK from overseas, over a twenty-year period. Between 1979 and 1999, UK residents consistently took more foreign trips than visitors arrived in the UK from abroad. Visits both to and from the UK rose steadily from 1979 to around 1986, before beginning to rise more sharply for the rest of the time shown on the graph. Foreign visits made by UK residents rose more quickly than visits to the UK, with around 20 million more people leaving the UK than visiting it in 1999. This is compared to the much smaller difference of just two million in 1979.

The bar chart shows the most popular foreign destinations for UK citizens in 1999. France was the most popular country to visit that year, accounting for roughly one fifth of the 52 million total visits from the UK in 1999. France and Spain were the most popular destinations by some distance; the USA was the third most popular, with a difference of 5 million visitors between it and Spain, which had around 9 million visitors in 1999.

Test 3 Task 2 Model Essay by an Expert Two

Freedom of expression is a crucially important human right. For this reason, I fundamentally agree that artists should be able to express their ideas however they want. However, I also acknowledge that the expression of certain notions should be banned, even in art.

On the whole, I have a fairly liberal view towards freedom of creative expression. I find the notion of governmental control of thoughts and ideas uncomfortably Orwellian; that is, it is characteristic of a totalitarian state, which attempts to control its citizens absolutely. In places such as North Korea, where freedom of individual expression is severely limited, it is illegal to express any opinion which criticises the regime or leadership of the country. Artistic expression that touches on any politics other than adulation of the political leader is strictly forbidden. This is evidence of a regime in which the citizens’ human right to freedom of thought and expression is restricted, to devastating effect.

On the other hand, there are also ideas which I believe should not be expressed through the medium of art. Art can be extremely influential, even encouraging people to act in certain ways. So if, for example, a film or picture incites hatred or violence, there should be governmental restrictions on this type of ‘art’. In other words, artists have some responsibility for how their work is received and how their work might affect others. If their so-called artwork encourages people to commit serious crimes and harm others, it should be banned.

Artists should certainly have the right to express their views and ideas through their work, even if their ideas are abhorrent to me personally. This is to protect society’s right to freedom of expression. However, if the work explicitly incites criminal activity and violence, the government should be able to restrict such art.

Censorship of artists is a very controversial topic these days. While many agree that art is better without the rules and interferences of the government, many also feel that certain types of artistic expression can damage society and have a negative impact on its youngest members. In this essay I will argue that though we cannot say a government should never impose restrictions, these restrictions should only limit artist’s freedom in extreme cases.

Take for instance the case of the celebrated Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Ai Weiwei was arrested in 2011 for criticizing the government, and promoting protests in Chinese cities. Many artists felt that Ai Weiwei’s arrest was a problem to do with human rights, and an international campaign was created to demand Weiwei’s release from prison. Weiwei should not have been put in prison simply for being critical of the government, or encouraging others to be critical. One cannot say that criticizing the government has a negative impact on a society. Often a government needs to hear what the public thinks of its policies, and creative artists have an important role to play in that regard.

The question remains: when can we say that a government is allowed to create restrictions? Writing or images that encourage hatred between individuals present us with a different picture. Regardless of our belief in the freedom of expression, governments are correct to get involved where people are made victims. In other cases, works of art can set negative models of behaviour which can lead to violence. Many believe that these cases are very clear. But even this is very difficult. The famous Irish novel Ulysses was banned in the United States when it was published at the beginning of the twentieth century, because it was considered to unsuitable. It is now considered to be a classic work of literature. This shows that public opinions change and that even works considered inappropriate may have a great deal of artistic value. Even in cases where we feel certain that a work of art is bad for society, not everyone will agree.

Though I have presented cases where government restriction is wrong and even presents human rights issues, we must also not forget that sometimes the government is right to get involved. Deciding each case is an extremely difficult task, and more often than not the answer is to let artists express themselves freely. In some extreme cases however, governments must risk the consequences of allowing censorship in order to prevent negative social influences, like the promotion of hatred and violence.

The graph below shows the demand for electricity in England during typical days in winter and summer. The pie chart shows how electricity is used in an average English home.

The graph compares electricity usage throughout the day in winter and summer in England. It shows that throughout the whole day, there is a higher demand for electricity in winter than in summer, by around 20,000 units at the point at which the difference is largest at around 5pm. In summer and winter, the daily demand for electricity follows a similar trajectory, with a trough at around 9am, and peaks at about 2pm and 10pm. However, in winter there is a pronounced peak at 3am, and summer usage shows a trough at about 4pm.

The patterns of winter and summer daily demands are consistent with the pie chart showing the usage of electricity in the average English home. Central heating and hot water provision make up the majority of electricity usage, potentially explaining the peak in usage in the mornings and evenings during winter. Electricity usage for cooking and cleaning appliances, lighting and entertainment appliances, and miscellaneous appliances such as electric tools, are all roughly equal.

– books
– radio
– television
– film
– theatre

Test 1 Task 2 Model Essay by an Expert

The presence of media everywhere today can cause an information overload. Different forms of media bombard the average person with hundreds of pieces of information and advertisement on any given day. As a result, we must look harder at the technologies available if we are to know how we can most effectively communicate information to a wide audience. What technologies are best to insure our message does not get lost among this mass of competing media? In this essay I will examine the advantages and disadvantages of radio, television, and books respectively, and argue for the supremacy of the book as a medium.

The radio was the first major technological advance of modern media, and it has been extremely successful. Many families still keep the radio on all day in the background, and it was common practice in pre-television America for families to gather around their set together, to hear favourite programs such as The Shadow or Dragnet. Radio still has an advantage over other forms of media because it is so easy to access: no special attention or activity is required. If the majority of radio listeners in the West today are car drivers, this further demonstrates that the radio can find listeners without making demands other media make – like sitting still or getting rid of distractions. But the radio is a victim of its own success in this regard, as it also fails to captivate in the way that other media can. That very ease of access also means that the impact of information communicated by radio is lessened.

By contrast, television is extremely absorbing – so much so that it is often blamed for childhood issues like Attention Deficit Disorder. This absorbing quality allows its messages to be communicated extremely effectively, and as information is generally communicated in short bursts it is possible to watch for long periods of time without getting bored. As a result, it is said that an American child on average spends altogether an entire day out of every week watching TV. While this seems to suggest the power of television to grab and hold one’s attention, does this mean that it is an ‘effective’ medium of communication? People often discuss the problem of ‘passive viewing’, meaning that TV viewers are focused but do not necessarily remember or even process everything they see.

As a result, the book shows itself to be the most effective medium. While reading, we both devote our attention in a focused way and are active readers, so that we must participate in the message’s communication ourselves. Reading also gives the reader the option of pausing to reflect and consider, and of going back to re-read. As a result it is possible to remember vividly stories read in childhood, whereas so little television seems to have the same effect. As an old technology, it is also cheap and easy to create and publish text.

In a world saturated by media options, it is oddly enough the oldest technology which still proves the most effective. As a communicator, the book both holds focused attention and encourages us to receive information in an active, rather than passive, way. As technologies continue to develop, we must not forget the sometimes the low-tech option is best!
